According to the ancient Chinese text Shan Hai Jing (The Classic of Mountains and Seas), there once stood a mystical mountain where a legendary peach tree grew. This was no ordinary tree—its roots stretched for 5,000 miles, and its massive branches intertwined like dragons, radiating a divine aura. Hidden within its canopy was the Gate to the Underworld, the passage between the realm of the living and the spirits of the dead.
At this gateway stood two powerful guardians, Shen Tu and Yu Lü, divine sentinels with piercing eyes and commanding presence. They wielded staffs carved from sacred peachwood, patrolling the threshold to capture malevolent spirits—those who had committed wicked deeds in life and sought to return to the human world after death. Because of this legend, peachwood has been revered for centuries as a sacred protector against misfortune and evil. Known as the “Guardian Wood”, it is believed to absorb negative energy and shield those who carry it. Since ancient times, people have carved the images of protective deities onto peachwood and placed them on doorways to ward off misfortune. Peachwood talismans, or “Tao Fu,” were inscribed with sacred symbols and blessings, hung to bring peace and protection. From ancient temples to everyday homes, peachwood has been treasured as a symbol of spiritual strength, a conduit of positive energy, and a guardian against unseen forces.
The Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shan Hai Jing) is an ancient Chinese text blending mythology, geography, and folklore. Written between the 4th and 1st centuries BCE, it describes mythical creatures, distant lands, and gods, offering a unique insight into early Chinese civilization. Its fantastical creatures, like the Kunpeng (a bird-fish hybrid) and Nine-Tailed Fox, are similar to Western mythological beings such as the Griffin and Werewolves.
